– Participated in the 9th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War
– “Peace and security a pending issue due to endless wars… we should raise our voices for peace”
Hyun Sook Yoon, the Chairwoman of International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) participated in the 9th Annual Commemoration of the Declaration of Peace and Cessation of War (DPCW) held on March 14 in Cheongju, South Korea, and highlighted the need for free movement of civilians between North and South Korea and urged international society to support the peaceful unification of North and South Korea.
Chairwoman Yoon said, “Peace and security are a very pending issue these days. With multiple wars waging around the world, such as the Russo-Ukraine War, we must continue to raise our voices for peace and the cessation of war.”
She added, “The Korean peninsula remains divided, with North and South Korea pointing guns and confronting each other for the past 70 years. So we are witnessing how the current international law and security measures are insufficient to build and maintain peace.”
Chairwoman Yoon mentioned the 10 Articles 38 Clauses of the DPCW, declared on March 14, 2016, and explained, “Article 3 of the DPCW specifies that states should take appropriate measures to strengthen universal peace and are banned from taking any acts of aggression, proposing freedom of religion and peace culture as means to building sustainable world peace.”
“In 2017, IWPG started the 10 Million Signature Campaign for ‘Urging for a Peace Agreement for the Cessation of War on the Korean peninsula,’ gathering signatures from 3 million people within a short time of 6 months. IWPG will develop on this campaign and gather more support on the peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula,” she added.
On the next day, March 15, Chairwoman Yoon will participate in the annual UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) held at the UN Headquarters to meet multiple government officials and UN ambassadors to urge for the support of the DPCW and peaceful unification of the Korean peninsula.
HWPL, an international NGO registered in the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), is implementing a nationwide campaign called “Together: Connecting Korea” to connect and bring together different generations, eras, cultures, and people with the participation of 170 civil society organizations. Through this event, HWPL expanded sociocultural interaction between North and South Korea and announced the establishment of the Preparatory Committee for Peaceful Unification of the Korean Peninsula.”
